Solar power makes tiny village beam

http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/07/26/india.solar/index.html

In a village in India a population that had never seen lights before welcomed the solar lights:

"Ram, the man credited with the transformation, doesn't have a high school degree. But he did attend an institution about an hour away called Barefoot College, established 35 years ago with an emphasis on helping India's rural population find solutions for their problems among themselves."

It is great to hear that this development has evolved in the hands of the people. I think it is interesting that solar power was the solution, maybe the man responsible for this development has something to teach the US (biggest energy guzzler there is.)

I also read this cute little article. It is very heartening to know that the first sign of civilization, light, came in the form of the environmental-friendly. It is unfair that the rich countries consume so much and make that much waste thereby destroying environment in the long run. But the poor countries also produce pollution from their factories which are there because the advanced countries do not like those harzardous plants to be in their own countries. Like in case of Bophal factory many years ago.

There should be ethic to live on this our only globe as we cannot immigrate to other planets after we consume and pollute everything in this globe.

It seems like this is happening more and more - people who previously had no electricity whatsoever have their first access to it in the form of solar or wind power. That is like skipping over the US's mistakes, and jumping ahead to sustainable development.
